Honda Day Coverage - Raceway Park

Honda Day at Raceway Park is always a great event. Vendors, show cars, race cars and spectators literally packed out Raceway Park this past Sunday. If you have never been to a Honda Day event you truly don't know what you are missing!

We are again proud to announce that Chris won the Outlaw Event against Jonathan Reynolds in the finals. NRG Tech team member Rob Mapps had a great day at the track as well with a personal best of 9.4 @ 150 on a 67 turbo! Unfortunately, because there was SO many racers participating, the SFWD final was called due to a time curfew. We're pretty sure Rob would have had the win in the bag though ;).

This Sunday, August 15 is Honda Day at Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ. This is an event not to be missed! Every year there is exciting racing and a huge turnout of both racers and spectators.

NSCRA Round 2 - This Weekend!

This weekend the NSCRA comes back to Maryland International Raceway for Round 2 of their Northeast Series. Round 1 was a great event with wins in the Outlaw class and All Motor Class for Team NRG and we expect to have another great weekend at Round 2.

Both the NSCRA and MIR are huge supporters of drag racing and have given us a series and location to race in. It is so crucial to this sports survival to support the sport as much as possible. Support the companies that support the racers! Come to the events- both spectators and racers alike! Not only are you helping the sport you love, but you are in for a great event! The NSCRA and MIR truly know how to host an event and we expect Round 2 to be a great weekend of drag racing!

NSCRA Interviews Rob Mapps

Jessica Barton of the NSCRA met up with Chris in between rounds at NSCRA Round 1 at MIR on June 13 to speak to him about his number 1 qualifying position and what we can expect throughout the season. Chris is a bit tired from the heat and the excitement of the weekend! As always, Jessica is a great host and NSCRA put on a entertaining and exciting event. Import Face-Off - July 11, 2010

This past weekend we had the pleasure of participating in the Import Face-Off Series at Capital Raceway in Maryland. This was Chris' first time racing an IFO event and we are all looking forward to competing in more of their races. The event had a fun, laid-back atmosphere and was staffed by helpful and knowledgeable people. Capital is a great track and we look forward to visiting it again. The locals are die-hard drag race fans which is always a plus when going to any event.

Along with Chris, Kevin Van Natten and Jose "Pepsi" Bello made the trip for the NRG Tech Team. Unfortunately, Kevin once again had driveline issues that plagued him throughout the event. He was due to line up with Chris in second round eliminations, however, the team decided not to kill themselves with taking on the task of swapping out his transmission at the track between rounds. Kevin's car is presently back at the shop and the trans will be coming out Wednesday and hopefully back together by the end of the week to allow some testing before the event next weekend.

Chris went into first round eliminations in the number one qualifier spot. Throughout each round Chris' car showed the consistency that it has become known for by laying down passes in the 8.7x's - 8.80's all day. Chris met Rick Everley in the final round. Rick knew he had to get Chris on the tree, however he pushed it a bit too much and went red. Chris' final time was 8.89 @ 165, getting out of it a bit early due to the car getting out of the groove a little around 1100 ft.

Pepsi continued to be a force within the All Motor class by taking the number one spot in qualifying. He continued to show his consistency round by round, picking off each competitor one by one. With a best of the weekend of 10.47 @ 132, Pepsi proved it doesn't take the perfect conditions to run great times. Pepsi was able to cinch the win in the finals when competitor Randy's H2B powered civic went red in an attempt to chop the tree down on Pepsi.

The event promotor Cliff did a great job making sure that everything ran smoothly and that racers had adequate time to go over our cars and to cool them done between rounds. We will for sure be attending future IFO events.

NSCRA NorthEast Round 1

This weekend we trekked down to Maryland International Raceway for Round 1 of the NSCRA at MIR. The weather was a HUGE factor this weekend. The heat was almost unbearable, which led to extremely high track temperatures. Along with the heat we had a few rain showers that delayed things for a bit. As always, the MIR track officials were on their A-game and the track prep was top-notch.

Going into first round Chris had the number 1 qualifying position. He wound up having a bye run, so he took a nice and easy stroll down the track. Second round Chris was up against Cesar Olin. Chris won the round with a 8.89 @ 171.

After a bit of a rain delay, Chris pulled into the final run against the TD Autowerks car driven by Josue Echevarria. The TD car had recently broken into the 8s and had an 8 second pass in qualifying rounds. We were eager to see a close race and possibly the first side by side 8 second pass. Although we didn't get to see two 8 second passes at once, it was a great run for both teams, with Chris taking the win with a 8.61 @ 172.

We would like to thank John Brown and the NSCRA along with Jason Miller and the entire staff of Maryland International Raceway for putting on a great event. As always we would like to thank Drive Shaft Shop, Precision Turbo, Spec Clutch, AEM, AVID and our crew (Paul, Greg, Ehren and Tom). Also, big thanks to GRS-motorsports for the excellent and quick coverage. We'd like to extend a big congratulations to all the winners in the classes.

And on a bit more serious note, we know the weather probably kept many people away, but in order for our sport to really thrive we need people in the stands and racers in the lanes! SUPPORT OUR SPORT! Come to the events!

Xtreme Imports Spring Kickoff

After some hard work and long nights we were able to iron out the issues we were having with the trans and clutch. Last week we trekked down to Maryland to visit with our friends at Charm City Tuning and to attend a track rental at MIR with them. We were psyched to get to Maryland on Sunday and be greeted with gorgeous weather! After lots of rain in New York we were very pleased to get to sunny, dry Maryland. We were also very excited to share some Maryland crabs with the Charm City crew!

Sadly, Monday did not greet us with the same weather as Sunday did! Luckily, Jason Miller of Maryland International Raceway was gracious enough to allow us to hang out in the tower and of course some friendly competition on the tree followed! Chris actually had some great reaction times on the tree practice! Now let's get him to harness that in at the actual events!

So we left Maryland with no testing having been done and no true insight as to wether or not our trans/clutch issues were truly a thing of the past.

This brings us to this past weekend, where we attended the Xtreme Imports Spring Kickoff at Atco Raceway in New Jersey. Team Puerto Rico came up to battle against Team USA.

Saturday began qualifying rounds. We had two great passes in qualifying! First round qualifying was 8.72 @ 171 and second round qualifying was 8.74 @ 176. Chris was able to nab top qualifier for both rounds and, more importantly, he finally had the seat time he had been waiting for all week. The trans and clutch issues seemed to be non-existent and both passes were clean and sharp.

Sunday came and so did the rain. The rain finally did clear up but not in time - the event was called due to weather. While it was very disappointing, safety is always a top priority and unfortunately the weather left much to be desired in terms of track safety and conditions.

The upside to this event, aside from getting in some great passes, was meeting many of the members of Team Puerto Rico. These guys are true racers! They love the sport and are great guys. We cannot wait to have another event with them and get to race with them.

In addition to meeting the racers of Team Puerto Rico, we have found yet another great racing forum! Too bad we don't speak Spanish but for now we will have to just look at the pics!! REconstructing Chris' Motor - Part 3

Yesterday and today have been two crazy days, so here's a quick update on where we are at with Chris' car!

Chris, Pepsi and Gio are currently going on about 36 hours of straight working. There were two scheduled tunes today for customers so we lost some time on Chris' car there. The last tune of the day is pulling off the dyno as I type this and now it's right back to Chris' car.

He says the car is about 80% done and should fire up early this evening. A few last minute issues came up last night that made it not possible to finish. Now that the rest of the world is back open he can get the parts he needs. The car still needs about 2 hours of assembly, a tune and, last but not least, a scale and align. Ohhhh, a new windshield may be helpful as well!

We are all keeping our fingers crossed that he can get the car up and running tonight in time to head out to Spring Nationals tomorrow.

REconstructing Chris' Motor - Part 2

Last night was a late one and Chris is back at it again, working on the engine. All the machine work is done on the shortblock and everything is balanced and blueprinted as well. The final steps of the shortblock build should take place this evening and into tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly, as we are set to leave for Englishtown late Friday night!

Next up on the agenda we have one final check of all measurements and clearances along with a final cleaning. Then we will proceed onto the assembly of the shortblock.

We have been in time crunches before but these past two weeks have been super hectic! With the ENTIRE motor going we were basically starting from scratch. Add to that some collateral damage and we had a pretty big up-hill battle against time. Late nights, persistence and skill played a part in the reconstruction, however without the help we have received from some people this reconstruction would still be at stage 1!

REconstructing Chris' Motor - Part 1

Before we get into the motor update, we would like to thank everyone who has sent words of encouragement and support our way via facebook, email and calls. We are truly honored to have so many people interested in the happenings of the car. Your words of encouragement and positivity are definitely pushing us to come back better than ever! So now onto the progress of the car...

The head is fresh out of the CNC and all of the parts for the head have arrived from Ferrea. Be sure to keep checking this blog for the exclusive drop of the NEW NRG Tech CNC Cylinder Heads coming very soon!

It's 1:30 pm and Chris is about to start cutting the valves and setting up the shims for the valve train. Between his daily work on customers projects he believes he should have the head all together and setup sometime later this evening. Customers projects are first and foremost always, so Chris has had to walk away from the head numerous times in the past few days.

After the head is together, the transmission will come apart and be inspected, along with the clutch.

14th Annual Spring Nationals - May 1 & 2

The 14th annual Sport Compact Spring Nationals event is quickly approaching. The two day event held at Raceway Park, Englishtown, NJ is always packed with fast cars, great teams and tons of excitement. Along with the regular classes, we have Team Puerto Rico vs Team Dominican Republic vs Team USA competing for $8,000 in the Q32 class. An estimated $30,000 in cash prizes will be paid out.

Along with some great drag racing, you can expect to see a fully loaded car show, both Saturday and Sunday. This is an event not to be missed! We are hard at work on Chris' car and will be there ready to put down some serious numbers.

Deconstructing Chris' Motor - Part 1

As many of you know, Chris hurt the motor pretty badly at Honda Day this past Sunday. Within the next 2 weeks he will be rebuilding and getting ready for Spring Nationals at Englishtown. We would like to share our progress with all of you for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, we've had many inquiries as to what happened and what will be remedied. We would like this blog to serve as a means to answer your questions. Secondly, we feel that in this industry you must constantly learn in order to grow. We are more than happy to share our knowledge and findings with you all.

In yesterday's blog we discussed what happened on the run at Honda Day. Here is a great picture sequence of the run.

That brings us to yesterday, Chris got the car completely apart last night and after inspection of everything it seems as though it was simply fatigue failure. The rod seemed to have let go. As we have mentioned previously, this motor has been through the last two previous seasons with NO problems. The poor thing simply gave out! Along with the rod problem, the piston hit the head and collapsed the chamber. So, long story short, we need an entirely new engine!

Chris was here till 2:00 am last night going over everything with a fine-toothed comb to make sure that this does not happen again. He really feels as though it was just a parts failure and that the engine had a long and happy life :) This short block had about 200 hits on it between the track and the dyno testing over the past 2.5 seasons.

Next up for Chris and the car are a few late nights, some overnight shipments and most definitely a few more records coming up. Stay tuned for more info on the next stage of the build!

Atco Honda Day Recap

This past Sunday's Honda Day at Atco Raceway was a perfect way to open up the season here in the Northeast. We were especially excited to test out some new parts we are using this season. We'd like to thank the entire staff at Atco Raceway for hosting such a great event and a huge shoutout to OGS for another killer event. Hopefully we can expect to see the same huge turnout at the next Honda Day event in August.

This was Chris' first time out with the car since last season. It was also his first time testing with the AEM and the Spec carbon carbon clutch. We were all anxious to see how the first pass in qualifying rounds would have us faring.

First pass Chris came out with a 8.89 @ 173, a great way to both start the season and allow us to take a sigh of relief! Everything seemed to be running great on the car and we were the number 1 qualifier going into the 2nd qualifier.

We missed 2nd round of qualifying because we never heard the announcement. Not too big of a deal but Jonathan Reynolds was able to just best our first round time, knocking us into 2nd qualifier going into round 1 eliminations.

First round is up, and we have a bye. Second round comes and we are up against Gary Eng. Unfortunately, Gary didn't make the call, so we essentially had another bye and were able to cruise down the track. That brought us into the finals against Jonathan Reynolds.

The car left the line with the BEST 60' it has ever had @ 1.481. However, as soon as Chris hit second gear it was over. We can't say for sure exactly what happened at this point. In the upcoming weeks we will be diagnosing the exact cause of what went wrong. As soon as Chris felt the car go, he put the brakes on in order to not oil down the track and delay the rest of the event.

No one likes to see a motor go, especially during the final run of an event. That being said, we couldn't have asked for more out of this motor. This engine has been together for what would have been its 3rd season. It has gone through 2 previous seasons of record breaking runs and LOTS of wear, with few to no problems. It was really a dream motor. In the next few days we will be tearing it down and figuring out what finally took it down.

Chris is wasting no time in preparing the repairs to the car in order to attend Spring Nationals at Englishtown May 1st and 2nd. He has already started ordering the necessary parts needed to get the new engine together and ready. There is a lot of work to be down from now to Spring Nationals in two weeks. We also plan on installing the new DriveShaft Shop Pro Axles in the car this week, as we did not have the time to get them in before this event. There will be many late nights at the shop for sure, but we will be there and have some more power with us as well!

Chris wasn't the only Team NRG Tech member racing yesterday. Jose "Pepsi" Bello had a great day in the All Motor class. His first pass of the year was a 10.50 @ 127. Pepsi hit the first round with a 10.47 @ 131. In the second round, after having dialed the car in a bit, Pepsi had his BEST 60' and 330 to date. Sadly, a missed shift ruined the run and he aborted shortly after. We expect to better the All-Motor record in a few weeks at Englishtown.

All in all it was a great day at the track. Racing is a constant battle. There will always be broken parts, lost races, missed shifts. We are continuing to test and learn and get better every time out!

Horsepower, Found

The blog has been quiet for a bit, but that doesn't mean we've been cooling our heels over here at the shop. In preparing for the 2010 season that is fast approaching, Chris took some time out to do some testing and diagnostics on his car.

First up, Chris wanted to see how his car sat at the end of last season. The car did better than any of us could have imagined it would and we were pretty sure there would be a price to pay for it. We never really got to dyno the car with the boost turned up at all, so Chris gave it shot. The results were initially mixed, but after two sets of 26" x 10" Mickey Thompson slicks and a few hours later we had some concrete answers.

At just over 35lbs. of boost the car made a little over 1000hp to the tires. At 46lbs. it made an astonishing amount of power by cracking the 1200hp mark at an SAE Correction factor. Actual power uncorrected was over 1250hp, but we'll stick with SAE Correction for our forum geeks out there ;)

After our dyno adventures, Chris moved onto testing a few new products he hopes will give him even more power than he already has. Hopefully, 2010 will shape up to be just as exciting, if not more, than 2009.

Driveshaft Shop Axles - A Lesson in Quality

Reliability is one of the key ingredients in the making of a fast racecar. Anyone can step up to the line and run a fast ET, all the while blowing your motor, breaking an axle and demolishing your turbo. Then it's back to the drawing board; a new build with new parts and more money because quality parts and service weren't utilized the first time.

We've seem this scenario play out too many times to count. It's because of this that we stress to our customers the importance of quality parts. Driveshaft Shop Axles are one of these "quality parts" we often recommend to our customers.

Driveshaft Shop axles are a great fit for anyone looking for a reliable aftermarket axle, no matter if it's for your daily driver or drag car.

Recently OBX tried to duplicate DSS's 5.9 axle. In an effort to show the quality of their product vs the duplicate, DSS tested the OBX axle against their original style and the new tapered one(current) for break testing. Here are the results:

OBX - 3300 ft*lbs - 55 degrees twist (this is what a 2.9 axle breaks at, a 3.9 is about 3700)

V3 - 4850 ft*lbs - 80 degrees twist (this is the original DSS style)

V4 - 5400 ft*lbs - 250 degrees twist (this is the new style with tapered bar)

Check out how much twist was allowed before breakage on the V4. This is very encouraging on the spline problem with stock splines!

All sets will be supplied with flow data sheets and all sets are packaged together to be flow matched sets within .5% to 1.5%.

We use only the best parts and craftsmanship when producing our injectors. We guarantee your satisfaction.

Some of the benefits of these fuel injectors are...

Excellent low pulse width response along with predictable response all the way down to 1.5ms.

They have an excellent wide spray pattern which translates into great fuel atomization.

These injectors have been tried and tested to operate at fuel pressures in excess of 10bar. On our larger fuel injectors such as the 2000's that translates into over 4000cc/min.

These injectors are compatible with the additive MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether), otherwise found in fuels such as VP's q16 and VP's Import blend.

High Impedance means no more resistor boxes or external injector drivers.

All sets will be shipped with the conversion hats as needed to fit the fuel system you are using them in (14mm or 12mm). Also pins and clips will be supplied with each order.

Our Year In Videos

This year we truly were able to learn so much about Miller's car as well as customers' cars by reviewing videos. Watching the play-by-play allows us to see where improvement is needed and where we either picked up power or lost it. Along with the data we compile, videos are an essential part to bettering our cars and driving.

Aside from the learning aspect, videos are a fantastic way for us to sit back and watch the runs, including our own, that we are too busy to watch at the actual event. This coming season we will hopefully be investing in a good camcorder, but until then we are very thankful to companies such as GRS-Motorports and NYCE1s, as well as fans, to provide us with excellent racing footage.

That Shirt Says 180!

After the video of Chris' 180 mph pass at Atco made it's way onto youtube and various forums a certain "catchphrase" was born. Aside from the sheer fact that the car went 180 mph, one of our crew members can be heard saying "That bitch says 180!" We thought it was pretty funny, as did most of the guys at the track.

In fact, so many people commented on that phrase that we decided to put it on a t-shirt.

The t-shirts were a huge success and we actually are on our second order of them. Now I'm thinking we need to commemorate the 8.50 pass with a t-shirt. The only problem is, when Chris went 8.50 everyone was too stunned to say anything!

Great Youtube Find!

While watching some of our videos on youtube last night, we discovered two excellent compilation videos by someone who goes by the username of Southice. The first video is from the NSCRA Finals at Palm Beach International Raceway on December 4 and 5. Sadly, the much-hyped Chris Miller vs. Tony Palo heads up race never came to fruitition, but this video displays the fantastic racing done by both guys.

The second video is a fantastic compilation of the Fall Nationals 2009 Outlaw Shootout. It features all the top racers at the event along with some great in-car footage. The video concludes with Chris showing exactly how happy he was to have won!

DeathMachines Researches the Great Tire Debate

DeathMachines.net recently interviewed some of the heavy-hitters in the Outlaw Class about tires. Read below to see what, according to these racers, is the future in terms of tires!

THE TIRE DEBATE
Saturday November 7, 2009. Maryland International Raceway, Mechanicsville, MD. The Race? The 15th Annual World Cup Finals. The players? Some of the world’s fastest “street” cars. With people from as far away as Florida to the south and Canada to the north, the stage was set to be one of the baddest races of all time.

The underlying race within a race is within the FWD realm. Some of the scene’s heaviest hitters have shown up and are looking to make an even bigger name for themselves. We’ve seen 8 second passes and some people are just jaded to them now. People like Chris Miller from NRG Tech have made 8 second passes look easy. Felix Medina has shown up and he’s already in the exclusive 8 Second Club as well. Brian Ballard isn’t a stranger to that class either, and others are well within spitting distance.
All of these cars are prepared similar and yet vastly different at the same time. Tires over the years have been a major sticking point. Not that many years ago everyone was on M&H 24.5″ tires, and no one thought there was a need to use anything else. Some people started using Mickey Thompson 26’s and not much changed. Then Tony Palo came along last year on a 26″ tire and made the first 8 second pass the class has ever seen, and what followed next was nothing short of expected. Everyone and their dog suddenly “needed” the 26’s. It was said in places like Honda-Tech.com that if you wanted to join the 8 second club, you’d have to run the 26″ tire, end of discussion…or was it???

Felix Medina shows up to the race on 24.5″ tires and everyone thinks that he’s just here for fun…nobody expected what would happen next. 8.838 @ 172.01 MPH! Those numbers on their own are impressive, but even more so when you consider that he did it on the small 24.5″ tire. This was something that almost everyone considered to be impossible.
That leaves people like me, as an educated observer, wondering if the carnage that 26″ tires cause is even worth it. Transmission cases, differentials, gears, axles and many other parts are being destroyed at a rate that out performs some small countries GDP’s.

So what has Felix done? Nothing short of turning the SFWD class on its proverbial ear. Kudos to you Felix, you deserve to be at the top of the heap!!

But now the question is: Where do we go from here? What did Felix and his team do that nobody else has done? Are the 26″ tires necessary? It certainly doesn’t appear so.

Luckily for us I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of people in the industry in my 15 years in it. So I approached some of the biggest names in SFWD, as well as other people who are considered experts on the class and Sport Compact Drag Racing in general. I asked for their take on where things have come from and where they want to see things go from here. 24.5″ vs 26″? What about the offering that M&H brings to the party, otherwise known as the 25.3″ tire. Can people still go blisteringly fast on the 24.5″ like Felix? Was it a fluke or has Felix just figured out something that nobody else has?

So we asked our panel of experts to see what their take is on the whole 24.5″ vs 26″ tire issue just to try and get their perspective and see if they were on the same page. Strangley enough after asking as many folks as we did, we got similar responses. Let’s check it out and for what it’s worth, we asked our respondents to give us quick and dirty answers so that this article didn’t end up as a short novel.

First up is Chris Miller of NRG Tech (nrgtechracing.blogspot.com)
What tire do you run now?
I run a 26×10 MT tire. I have built the whole car around the tire. Body, gearing, everything is molded around the tire.

Can the 24.5″ tire gain popularity with what Felix did?
The 24.5″ tire is already as popular as it can get. If the question is geared towards the outlaw class then NO. The only reason people run that tire in outlaw is because they can’t run the big tire. Their gearing, the body lines, chassis, everything is setup around the small tire. For them to switch to the big tire would be a lot of work. The same work it would be for a person like myself to switch back to the 24.5″. Actually it would be a lot more work for me to put a 24.5″ tire on my car. I would have to redo the entire front of the car. I would have to change the brakes, redo the intercooler setup, new traction bars. I mean everything. I am not doing that.
In the end it’s all about how the car is setup. If it is setup around a 24.5″ you can’t just throw on a 26″ and vice versa.

What is your team best this year?
The best we’ve run this year was an 8.507 @ 173 MPH until recently we had run anywhere from 169 to 172. No one hit wonder here. In testing at Atco, the car had its best back half and best MPH of the year with a 180 MPH out the back door.

Which tire do you run now?
We run MT 26×10x15 now and don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Do you think the 24.5″ tire will become more popular in 2010 especially with what Felix did?
Not more popular than the past, but I still see them staying popular. I think more and more people will be changing to 26×10’s in 2010. It’s natural progression, everybody wants to go faster.

What was your teams personal best pass in 2009?
9.0 @ 158 MPH. Hope to better that significantly in a couple of weeks. *EDITORS NOTE – Team T1 went 8.83 @ 170 MPH at NSCRA Race in Florida 6/12/09*

Which tire do you run now?
Currently nothing, hopefully have something to play with on 24.5’s next year.

Do you think the 24.5″ tire will become more popular in 2010?
24.5’s have always been the most popular, 26’s seem to be the ones gaining popularity.

Is the 26″ tire the favorite of the competitors for the 2010 season?
Nobody likes 26’s unless they have a lot of money. The guys running 26’s with success have $5,000+ clutches, $6,000+ gear sets, $5,000+ axles, $2,000 bell housings. Most have spare parts as well.

I run 24.5″ tires now.

What was your teams personal best pass in 2009?
8.83 @ 172 MPH on 24.5″ tire.

I think it is already the popular tire among SFWD guys, only the outlaw guys that are pushing the envelope are running 26’s. The 24.5’s are much easier on the drive train and the pocketbooks.

24.5″ and 26″ depending on what we feel and what event we are running.

Do you think the 24.5″ tire will become more popular in 2010 especially with what Felix has done?
The 24.5″ tire will always be popular for guys looking to have fun and keep their drive trains together – the tire is a solid choice for anyone making over 400 HP – that is a huge market.

Any chance of seeing a 24.5″ shootout?
Too many poeple like to throw their opinions in the pot on rules, etc. It would be a huge pissing match to make a 24.5″ tire shootout not worth it, people just need to run what is out there and have fun.

Last but certainly not least, I had to go back and talk to my good friend Arturbo, who has been out of the game for some time now but always willing to lend a hand to whoever needed it, including me.
Which tire do you run now?
The last time anyone ever saw me run was at the NHRA event in Las Vegas in 2007. I can’t say I currently run a tire but I plan on running the 24.5″ slicks when the car comes back. For now, the car will be true to its name, Urban Legend.

Do you think the 24.5″ tire will become more popular in 2010 especially with what Felix did?
When I was running a class, the 24.5″ was the tire of choice because the rules allowed up to a 25″ tire in NHRA’s SFWD. I think it’s always been popular but there have been several who have gone to a 26″ tire, which is allowed in the current outlaw class.

So there you have it. Some of the biggest names in the sport and some people who are no longer competitively racing but still keeping tabs on the sport, and the opinions are as varied as the cars being drive. What do you think???

Perfect End to an Amazing Season!

The 2009 season has truly been a dream come true for us! We hit 8s early in the year and never looked back, allowing us to have a consistent 8 second car for much of the season. Times kept dropping and mph kept getting higher as the season continued on.

In September we set a new world record ET and MPH of 8.75 @ 171 at the IMSTAR event at Maryland International Raceway. We went on to hit 8.75 two more times!

October was a very important month for us and the Outlaw class as a whole as we had the 2nd Annual Outlaw Shootout at Englishtown, NJ. This was an amazing race for us! On top of our win with a 8.75 @169, we had numerous customers compete in the event and hit their personal bests. We were like proud parents, lol!

All in all, it was a fantastic season. Lots of events, lots of records, lots of fun.

This past weekend was our last official event of the 2009 season. The NSCRA Finals at Palm Beach International Raceway was a great event that unfortunately had to end prematurely due to inclement weather. Despite the rain we had a great time, especially when we once again broke our own record and ran a 8.50 @ 173! That run truly was the cherry on top of the sundae!

We cannot wait till next season as we are sure it will be another amazing year!

Miller vs. Palo - This Weekend!

Tomorrow we leave for the long drive to Palm Beach International Raceway for the NSCRA Finals. This is sure to be a great race and one not to be missed! The NSCRA website has posted a great note on their website that has totally hyped us up for this weekend.

T1 Race Development vs. NRG Tech Racing

If you want to witness two record setting FWD drag cars, you better make sure you are at Palm Beach International Raceway on Saturday, December 5th 2009. For the first time in sport compact drag racing history, Palo and his T1 Race Development Integra will line up against Miller and his NRG Tech Racing Civic. NSCRA Final Event

To be honest, we weren't planning on making the trip to Florida for this event. We were planning on ending our season with World Cup and resting up a bit until 2010.

But as many of you know, resting doesn't come easy for Miller and the NRG Tech team. And we can't help but rise to any challenge. So after much consideration, some pleading and some generous help, we have decided to haul it down to PBIR (Palm Beach International Raceway) and take home the win for NY one last time this year.

The season finale kicks off Friday, December 4th and ends December 6th. This 3-day event is chock-full of exciting events that are not to be missed! On the line-up is a 20 Class Car Show, Live Mobile Dyno Competition, Hot Body Bikini Contest and, lest we forget, some of the Best Drag Racing in the country!

180 MPH - New World Record!

Miller has done it again! He has beaten his own MPH world record! Yesterday night at Atco Raceway Chris completed some exhibition passes. His final run of the night was a staggering 8.9 @ 180 mph!

After dyno testing the car this week to test new cams Chris was able to find roughly 200 hidden horsepower! Hopefully we can squeeze in a bit more track time before winter rears its ugly head. The track was oiled down quite a few times and the very cold temps last night were not conducive to great track conditions. In better conditions we are sure to drop to our lowest time ever!

New All-Motor World Record!!

We are always overjoyed to see our customers attain their racing goals and hit their personal bests. We love it even more when they smash world records!

This past weekend Jose Bello aka Pepsi shattered the All-Motor world record at Import Survival Series/Street Wars at Englishtown. Pepsi's new world record is a staggering 10.42 @ 131 mph! He then went on to win the event in the finals against Tim Grey.

This is a great way to bring the 2009 season to a close! Congrats again to Pepsi and the whole Stage 2 Crew!

This past weekend was MIR's World Cup Finals, a two-day event that pits domestics against imports. As usual, it was a packed event with great racing, new personal bests and fun times.

We have had an amazing season this year, winning every event we entered. But as the old saying goes, you can't win 'em all! Saturday was a promising day for us as we ended the day with an 8.76, putting us in the #1 qualifer position. However, Sunday just didn't seem to hold the same fortune for us. We redlit in the first round. You win some, you lose some. We still had a fun weekend and enjoyed seeing our customers and friends hit their own personal bests.

Congrats to our customers for some great racing and great times this weekend! We were so proud to see 4 of our customers hit their personal best times this weekend!

Miller Takes Home The Win!

This past weekend was the 2nd Annual Outlaw Shootout at Fall Nationals at Englishtown, and what an amazing weekend it was! We started off the week with Danny Smith coming in from Alabama, Jose Jiminez and Aldo Mireles coming in from Texas and Alberto Rodriguez coming in from Albany all to get some work done before the Shootout. What resulted was 90+ hours of straight labor, long days, even longer nights, broken parts and some seriously stressed racers. After a very long week, we set out on Friday morning for Englishtown, NJ with our sights set on Raceway Park. After arriving we began doing some testing on Alberto Rodriguez's civic which was to run the SFWD trim. ARod managed to nail down his personal best time and mph with a 9.47@155mph.

Saturday morning we were up early finishing up some mechanical work and polishing up some tunes. The rain delayed qualifying for a few hours on Saturday afternoon but we were eventually able to get the qualifying runs in. Miller was #1 qualifier with a 8.81@171mph.

Saturday night was a true showing of how much racers really look out for and help fellow racers! Jose Jiminez and Aldo Mireles, both of 1320 Racing in Texas, ran into some brake and axle problems. Jose's brakes kept locking up and we were, eventually, able to diagnose the issue and fix it. Aldo's axle broke in the halfshaft. While Greg Fiero from the NRG team and Aldo drove to Long Island to get a new axle, Jay at http://www.n2mb.com/ was a huge help with getting the axle out of the half shaft. Bill Draghi and Paul Pero also stayed up all night to help out.

Sunday was a literal whirlwind. From the minute we woke up (after our 2 hours of sleep) till the last race went off the day was nothing but full of energy and craziness! Everyone involved in this event, from the track officials to the racers to the fans, was AWESOME! The racers who competed put on an amazing show. Between their dedication to the sport and their absolute willingness to push their cars to limit they were able to give us all an incredible event.

Chris had an amazing run all day Sunday. Everytime we thought that the car had nothing left in it, him and the crew pulled it out. As many of us know it was Chris and Fernando Cunha in the finals. Both cars were hurt, but these two showed just how much fight they have in them. Chris was able to pull it out one last time and ran a scorching 8.75 @ 172 mph.

We (Chris and myself) need to acknowledge and thank some people without whom this event would have never seen the light of day!

Back to Maryland!

This evening Miller will be hopping on a plane and heading back to Maryland. More specifically he will be going to MIR to help Shawn Ramey get some testing done.

Shawn's car was just up here at our shop last week getting some work done. Aside from a dyno tune by Miller, we did the following:

- Scale and corner the car

- Set up the suspension

- Align the car

- Racepak setup

-Dial in boost controller

-Fit front end around tires

Now with some new DSS 5.9 axles installed this week, Shawn's civic should be ready to roll. And roll it will down the track at MIR this Saturday and Sunday for testing in anticipation of the Outlaw Shootout in two weeks. Jeff from ATC Race Supply will also be at the track with the guys to lend a helping hand.

Record Breaking Weekend

Another weekend down, another win under our belt. We could not be happier with how the car is performing. It has been running consistent high 8's for the better part of the season and the IMSTAR event on Sunday at MIR was no exception. Our Labor Day weekend labor paid off in a major way with Miller running the car at 8.75 @169.40 mph! A new personal best and new world record! Labor(ing) Day Weekend!

Labor Day Weekend is upon us and rather than take a 4 day vacation like most people (lucky!) we will be doing some hard labor!

The Fall Nationals Imstar event at MIR (Maryland International Raceway) is just 1 week away and that means it is serious crunch time here at NRG Tech. We are taking Miller's civic down to compete on Sunday, however, we've decided to drive down to Southern Maryland on Friday night and try to relax before the race. So that leaves us with EXACTLY 7 days to get the car in tip-top running order.

Yesterday Miller finished assembling and installing his new PPG Bseries dogbox tranny! NRG Tech are direct dealers for PPG/Bullhead Gears and we are proud to run a quality tranny such as theirs in our car. (Want more info on PPG trannys and Bullhead Gears products? Drop us a line at 631-243-6674 or write to Miller@nrgtechparts.com) Later today we will be "street tuning" the car with shift cut and ironing out any minor hiccups.

We will also be changing the fuel system a bit. About 3 weeks ago at Honda Day we realized that we were at 99/100% duty cycle going through the traps. That day the temperature was in the scorching high 80s/low 90s. Now, with the temperature on the decline the car will begin to make even more power, therefore we will need more fuel. Hurricane Danny Washes Out Our Weekend

As of last week our plans were to head up to New England Dragway for Import Wars and then head over to Raceway Park in Jersey for some testing on Sunday. Well, with all the hurricane talk and the rain we were hit with on Friday, we admittedly jumped the gun a bit and decided to consider the weekend a wash out. Imagine our surprise (and aggravation) when we woke up on Saturday to a dry day and then on Sunday to a beautiful and dry day! Thanks a lot, weatherman.

Anyway, with two wide open days ahead of us we decided to put them to some good use. So first up, we pulled the tranny out of Miller's civic to give it a good overall checking. We are happy (and relieved) to report that the tranny looked great. Next we made some minor gearing changes in the hopes of going faster in the first half of the track. The testing that was to be done this past Sunday will now have to be done this week sometime. Hopefully, we can wrap up all of the loose ends and test in time for the IMSTAR Fall Nationals down at Maryland International Raceway on September 13.

8.86 Second Run at MIR

We are heading out to New England Raceway in New Hampshire this Saturday and then Raceway Park in New Jersey on Sunday with the intention of putting down another set of great numbers. The car has been running consistent, great numbers and we want to keep the momentum alive! Chris' goal is to hit 8.7x this season. Now, if mother nature can just turn the thermostat down a notch or two then we can hit this mark for sure!

In the spirit of great runs, take a look at this video shot at the IMSTAR event at Maryland International Raceway a month ago. The time sign is a bit too far from the camera, but you're hearing correctly - 8.86 @168 mph (yea, that's the record holding time!)

Tuning Tips

So much of our business has becoming tuning (especially with the in-house DynoJet 248x we purchased 2 years ago) that we feel it is necessary (and helpful) to post up some do's and don'ts when getting tuned.

Tuning is a vital step in the development of a reliable, fast race car. While your main concern should be to hire a tuner with experience, reliability and knowledge, there are also some prepatory actions you, as the car owner, should take to ensure a satisfactory tune. We have compiled a list of preparations every car owner should take before their scheduled tuning session.

Electrical Issues
Wiring—The engine harness should have NO exposed wires. Also, DO NOT twist and tape wires together, either take the time to get them soldered.
Codes—If your car is displaying a "check engine" light, that's exactly what you should do - check the engine! Any tuner worth his salt will not tune a car with codes displaying. Take the time to have them checked before your tuning session. This will save you time and money. Exceptions to this are O2 sensor code, O2 heater code and knock sensor code. These will be disabled at your tuning session.
Battery/Alternator—Should be charging 13.5-14 Volts at all operating conditions. Exceptions to this are race cars running a 16V battery or a crank pulley that underdrives the alternator (i.e. Fluidampr race pulley).
Fuel Pumps—DO NOT install the pumps if there is dirt, debris or rust in the tank. If there is rust in the tank, replace it. You will starve the engine of fuel if you leave junk in the tank. Do it right the first time so there won't have to be a second time!
Grounds - Make sure you have clean grounds. The 3 major grounds are:
-battery to chassis
-transmission case to chassis
-valve cover to chassis
Fuel Issues - If you are sumping your tank, make sure the tank is free of metal chips, welding slag and any other debris. Those running external fuel pumps need to check the pre and post filter before the tuning session, assuming you have started the car. We only recommend stainless filters for aftermarket external fuel pump setups. Paper filters can deteriorate and collapse over time. Pre-filter should be 20-40 micron. Post filter should be 100+ micron. Lack of a good ground can cause starting issues, ignition issues and intermittent performance issues. Fuel Pressure: For any application, we recommend having a fuel pressure guage. If you are looking for an electronic option, AEM, Apex, and Greddy all make decent gauges. If you have a standalone that allows datalogging (such as AEM, Hondata, FAST), we highly encourage getting a fuel pressure sensor to monitor. Note your fuel pressure before tuning. Base fuel pressure with engine on and vacuum line removed from the fuel pressure regulator should be between 40-50psi. Fuel pressure regulator (fpr): Aftermarket FPR is not necessary for every application. If fuel pressure is greater than 50psi, get a regulator. Injectors: Make sure there are no vacuum or fuel pressure leaks as a result of torn or old o-rings. Mechanical Issues with Engine—What is a healthy engine???Compression test results should be as follows:
8:1-8.5:1 compression: 150-170 psi per cylinder
8.5:1~9.5:1 compression: 170-210 psi per cylinder
9.5:1~11:1 compression: 210-275 psi per cylinder
11:1+ compression: 250+ per cylinder (highly depends on cams being used)
DO NOT have more than 20psi variance between cylinders. All 4 cylinders should have good compression!
Valve Lash - Make sure the engine has proper valve lash for the cams being used. For OEM cams, .007 on the intake and .009 on exhaust. Aftermarket cams typically require different settings. Refer to the manufacturer for these specifications. Valve adjustments should be done when the motor is completely cool.
Timing Belt - Needs to be installed properly (as does all your other parts!)
Should have minimal to no slack. If it is too loose, you run the risk of skipping a tooth or running incorrect timing.
Oil Leaks - Some of the more common types of leaks are:
-Oil pan
-Cam seal
-Distributor seal
-Valve cover gasket seal
-VTEC solenoid seal
-Oil filter
-Oil sandwich adapter
ALL of these leaks will need to be fixed before tuning. Turbo Systems - Make sure you have secured your pipes so that they do not blow off at a tuning appointment. Use silicone hump hoses where applicable and t-bolt clamps. Ensure that all bolts are tightened.

GT/Ball bearing turbo - All water cooled ball bearing turbos must use coolant lines. Oil is only used for lubrication, not cooling on a GT turbo. If you do not run separate coolant lines in addition to oil lines you can ruin the turbo seals and/or bearings. Garrett GT turbos should not see more than 40psi of oil pressure. Engines can see 70-100psi at WOT and over 80psi cold depending on oiling system and weight of oil being used. As a result, you need to run an oil restrictor on the turbo in addition to the one it already comes with. Exhaust - All turbo cars should run a minimum of 3” downpipe, test pipe, and exhaust. All motor and supercharged b and d-series motors can run a 2.5” exhaust. A 3” exhaust is not necessary, but will not hurt power if it is used. All motor, supercharged and nitrous k and h-series motors should use 3” exhausts.We do not recommend catalytic converters on any turbocharged car. If you must run a cat to pass visual inspection, we highly recommend gutting the cat and essentially running a test pipe. Intercooler - We do not recommend using cheap eBay intercoolers. No cracks or pinhole leaks! We always tell our customers - do it right the first time around! Spend a little more money initially and you won't pay later! Ignition - We recommend OEM spark plug wires/coil packs for every application. If running MSD, we only recommend using the digital series, not the analog. Make sure you have the proper coil to go with the digital 7 box. Cap/Rotor - New OEM cap and rotor are recommended unless running an ignition amplifier box, such as MSD, M&W, etc. Spark plugs - It's a good rule of thumb to always bring a new set of spark plugs with you to your tuning appointment. We always have spark plugs available if you need them, but they're not included in the tuning price! Bseries, D-series, H-series, and NSX:
Pump gas: NGK BKR7E-11
Race gas: NGK R5671A-9
K-series, s2000:
Pump gas: NGK BKR8EIX-11
Race gas: NGK BKR9EIX-11
Recommendations on plugs are the same for all applications (i.e. turbo, all motor, nitrous, supercharged). **Please note that anyone running a Hondata s300 or Kpro must use a resistor style spark plug. If you do not do this, you will have performance and datalogging issues.** OBD Conversions - What you'll need to go from OBD-2 to OBD-1 is the following:
OBD-2 to OBD-1 conversion harness
OBD-1 ECU such as p28/p30/p72/p75/p06/etc
OBD-1 injector clips if going with aftermarket fuel injectors
What you'll need to go from OBD-0 to OBD-1 is the following:
OBD-0 to OBD-1 converter harness
OBD-1 distributor
OBD-1 ecu**We have conversion harnesses, injector clips and ecus in stock. Please call/email to reserve for your appointment.

Miscellaneous
-Make sure all fluid levels are up to par. Oil, coolant and other fluids are available, but are not included in the tuning price. Plus, no coolant or oil means no bueno for the motor! If your car is overheating, reschedule your appointment. A car that is overheating cannot be tuned.

- We invite all of our customers to stay and watch their car get tuned. We do ask that you take the proper safety precautions. Ear plugs are readily available - wear them. It gets very loud in the shop when the dyno is running. Keep a safe distance from the dyno while in motion. Small children should not be anywhere in the shop, especially when the dyno is running!

Honda Day 2009

This Saturday we headed out to Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ for what is quickly becoming one of the most popular events in the NorthEast Honda community - Honda Day.

For those of you who aren't familiar with Honda Day, it's a full day of heads up racing, bracket classes, car shows, vendor booths and car enthusiasts galore! The turnout was amazing, to say the least. Six hundred tech cards were given out and the stands were filled. Despite there not being an Outlaw Class at the event for us to run, Miller decided to take the car out for some track testing. The civic ran a fantastic time of 8.86 seconds at 171 mph in the scorching heat!

Congrats to all the racers who came out and ran at Honda Day!
